Grief is not a linear path but a lens for new futures

Nina Westbrook: How to support yourself (and others) through grief · 7:13 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We often treat grief as a hurdle to clear or a series of boxes to check. In reality, it is a natural emotion that shapes how we perceive the world. Understanding its mechanics allows us to move from being overwhelmed by loss to using it as a framework for imagining what comes next.

Grief is frequently misunderstood as a simple reaction to death. However, therapist Nina Westbrook notes that it encompasses any significant loss, including the end of a career, the closing of a dream, or the dissolution of a relationship. Because it is a natural emotion, it serves as a powerful lens through which individuals can eventually imagine and construct new futures rather than just mourning the past. The experience of grief is highly individualized. While the 'stages' of grief—denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance—are commonly cited, they do not follow a linear or predictable order. People may skip stages entirely or experience them in a chaotic, unpredictable sequence. Common symptoms can include shock, numbness, overwhelming sadness, exhaustion, anger, and guilt. These feelings may appear unexpectedly and do not have to be constant; they are often intense but tend to decrease in intensity over time. Supporting others requires a nuanced approach, particularly in sensitive cases like suicide. Experts recommend using non-stigmatizing language, such as 'died by suicide,' to avoid the outdated criminal context of 'committed suicide.' It is vital to avoid speculating on the 'why' of a death, as the causes are complex and oversimplification can lead to feelings of blame. Instead, the focus should remain on the life of the deceased and the person's current comfort level regarding sharing details. For self-care, the focus shifts to manageable targets, physical health—like regular exercise and stable nutrition—and avoiding substances like alcohol or drugs to numb the pain.
