How a Scottish pop icon pivoted from Eurovision winner to a beauty entrepreneur

Lulu, the powerhouse voice behind the 1967 US number-one hit To Sir, with Love, has navigated a six-decade career that spans far beyond the recording studio. From Eurovision victory to television hosting and eventually launching her own anti-ageing beauty brand, she transformed her public image into a lasting commercial enterprise.

Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in 1948, Lulu rose to international fame as a teenager with her raucous 1964 cover of The Isley Brothers' Shout. Her career was defined by early, rapid success, including topping the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 with Boom Bang-a-Bang. Despite later describing the Eurovision track as a rotten song, she recognized the strategic value of the platform, which propelled her into a prolific period of television hosting and variety shows throughout the 1970s.

For over 25 years, Lulu’s career was managed by Marion Massey, with whom she operated as an equal business partner. However, by 1989, Lulu sought to evolve beyond the constraints of her established recording persona. Encouraged by her then-husband John Frieda, she ended her long-standing professional association with Massey to pursue new avenues. This shift marked a transition from being solely a performer to managing her own brand identity, eventually leading her into the world of retail and television commerce.

By the late 2000s, Lulu had successfully diversified her professional portfolio. She leveraged her public profile to launch a range of beauty products called Time Bomb, which she promoted through the home shopping channel QVC. Using her own youthful appearance as a central promotional tool, she effectively bridged the gap between her legacy as a pop star and the demands of the modern consumer market. This pivot allowed her to maintain a high public profile, appearing on television and radio, while securing her financial and professional independence long after her peak chart years.
