Nina Dobrev became a household name playing Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries, but she famously exited the hit series after six seasons. Years later, she revealed the decision stemmed from a pay dispute, as the network refused to offer her compensation equal to her male co-stars.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1989, Nina Dobrev moved to Canada at age two. Her path to stardom began with the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, but her career reached a new plateau in 2009 when she was cast as the lead in The Vampire Diaries. The show required immense range, as she portrayed multiple characters, including the human Elena Gilbert and the ancient vampire Katherine Pierce. Her commitment to the series spanned six seasons, during which she became a central figure in the show's massive cultural footprint.
The decision to leave the series in 2015 was a pivotal moment in her career. While the show continued, Dobrev transitioned into feature films, including the 2017 action blockbuster XXX: Return of Xander Cage, which grossed $346 million worldwide. It was not until September 2025 that she clarified the circumstances of her departure. She has invested in various beverage companies and co-founded Fresh Vine Wine alongside dancer Julianne Hough. Her life outside of Hollywood has also been marked by significant personal milestones and challenges, including a high-profile engagement to Olympic athlete Shaun White, which ended in 2025, and a harrowing experience evacuating her Los Angeles home during a wildfire that same year.
