From textile entrepreneur to the twelfth president of Pakistan: the life of Mamnoon Hussain

Before he occupied the presidential palace, Mamnoon Hussain was a businessman who built his own textile empire in Karachi. His journey from a leather-trading family in British India to the highest office in Pakistan reveals a career defined by quiet loyalty, professional discipline, and a steady rise through political ranks.

Born in Agra in 1940, Mamnoon Hussain moved to Karachi with his family in 1949. His early life was rooted in commerce; after graduating from Karachi University in 1963, he earned an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration in 1965. He initially supported his father’s leather and footwear business before striking out on his own to establish a successful textile company in Karachi. This business background eventually propelled him into public life, where he served as president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry from 1997 to 1999.

Hussain’s political ascent was marked by his unwavering allegiance to Nawaz Sharif. Though he began his political activism in 1968, his national profile grew significantly after he joined the PML(N) in 1993. His professional demeanor and polite discourse impressed Sharif, leading to his appointment as Governor of Sindh in June 1999. However, his tenure was brief; a military coup led by Pervez Musharraf in October 1999 ousted the government, and Hussain’s subsequent opposition to the military regime resulted in his imprisonment.

Despite an unsuccessful bid for the National Assembly in 2002, Hussain remained a trusted ally within the PML(N). In 2013, he was nominated for the presidency and secured a decisive victory, receiving 432 votes against his rival’s 77. As the twelfth president of Pakistan, he maintained a low-key profile, focusing on initiatives like polio eradication. He served until 2018, leaving behind a legacy as a loyal statesman who bridged the worlds of industry and governance. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 80.
