In short: From the industrial corridors of Lahore to the Prime Minister's office, Shehbaz Sharif’s journey is inseparable from his family's rise. After losing their steel business to nationalization, the Sharif family pivoted from commerce to a political legacy that has defined Pakistan for decades.

The political trajectory of Shehbost Sharif is deeply intertwined with the fate of his family's industrial interests. Born in 1951 to a Kashmiri Punjabi family that had relocated from Amritsar to Lahore following the 1947 partition, Sharif's early life was shaped by the Ittefaq Group, a conglomerate founded by his father, Muhammad Sharif. However, the 1972 nationalization of the company under President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto disenfranchised the family, providing a powerful catalyst for their entry into politics.

Sharif's ascent began in the late 1980s, bolstered by the political prominence of his elder brother, Nawaz Sharif. While Nawaz served multiple terms as prime minister, Shehbaz established himself as an able administrator, most notably serving as the Chief Minister of Punjab. His tenure in this role spanned over 12 years across three separate terms, including periods from 2008–2018 and 2013 onwards. He also took the helm of the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) in 2017 after Nawaz was disqualified by the Supreme Court.

His leadership has been marked by both administrative milestones and intense volatility. Serving as Prime Minister during the 202_2–23 period and again from 2024, his recent term followed a 2024 election characterized by widespread allegations of electoral irregularities. While some praise his diplomatic mediation efforts, his administration has faced significant criticism regarding economic inflation, restrictions on free expression, and the perceived weakening of judicial and military institutions.
