The unprecedented statistical leap of WNBA's most improved player
In short: In professional basketball, massive year-over-year jumps are rare. Yet, Veronica Burton achieved something never before seen in the WNBA, transforming from a role player into a dominant force through a historic statistical surge that earned her the league's Most Improved Player award during the 2025 season.
After being selected seventh overall in the 202 2 WNBA draft by the Dallas Wings, Veronica Burton's early professional career was marked by modest numbers. During her two seasons with the Wings, she averaged 2.5 points and 2.1 assists across 76 regular season games. Following a stint with the Connecticut Sun in 2024, Burton was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the 2024 expansion draft.
The 2025 season, however, marked a historic pivot. Burton made WNBA history as the sole athlete to boost her per-game stats by no less than five points, two rebounds, and two assists, assuming 30 games minimum per season. She recorded season highs of 1.1 steals, 6.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 11.9 points. This surge earned her the WNBA Most Improved Player award.
Burton's impact extended to a singular, historic performance on August 19, 2025, against the Phoenix Mercury, where she became the first player in league history to record at least 24 points and 14 assists in a single game without a single turnover. The Valkyries' opponents averaged only 76.3 points and a 40.5% shooting percentage thanks to her defensive impact.
This professional evolution mirrored her decorated collegiate career at Northwestern. There, she was a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, joining Tanisha Wright as the only player to achieve that feat. By the time she renounced her final year of eligibility in March 2022, she had cemented her legacy as one of the premier defenders in the nation.
