In short: Shangela's career began with a chance encounter involving a friend and a woman on a telemarketing call. Today, that persona has navigated the heights of Hollywood—from walking the Oscars red carpet in drag to co-hosting HBO series and launching a talent management agency.

Born Chantaize Darius Jeremy Pierce in 1981, Shangela developed his craft through creative English class projects in high school before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University. His professional breakthrough occurred in Los Angeles after he was persuaded to fill a vacant role in a three-person drag performance choreographed to "Single Ladies." This debut impressed a promoter enough to secure him regular bookings, eventually leading to his selection for the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race.

Shangela’s trajectory is marked by significant milestones and high-profile collaborations. While promoting A Star Is Born, he made history as a drag queen by traversing the Oscars red carpet for the first time during 2019. His versatility has seen him appear in mainstream series like Community and Glee, as well as musical projects involving Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. Beyond performance, he launched "Say What Entertainment" in 2014 to manage talent and served as a creative director for the Werq the World tour.

Despite his success, Shangela’s career has faced complex hurdles and public scrutiny. While he won the inaugural California Entertainer of the Year pageant in 2010 and was ranked among the "most powerful drag queens" by New York magazine, he has also faced serious legal challenges. He was the subject of a lawsuit involving allegations of sexual assault, which was settled in early 2024 after mediation. A subsequent civil lawsuit filed in February 2025 regarding an incident in 2017 remains pending as of February 2026.
