Sigma Olomouc: a Moravian club of cup glory, corruption fines and a 7–1 night
Founded in 1919 as FK Hejčín Olomouc, Sigma spent three decades in the top flight and once thrashed Fenerbahçe 7–1 in a European tie. Its finest domestic moment, the 2012 Czech Cup, arrived in the very season a corruption inquiry stripped it of nine points and, soon after, a place in European competition.
Name changes tell part of its story. Ties to the Moravské železárny ironworks gave it the title Sokol MŽ Olomouc in 1949, the word Sigma was added in 1966, it became TJ Sigma ZTS in 1979, and the present SK Sigma Olomouc dates from 1996. Under the ZTS name it first reached the national top division in 1982–83, returned in 1984–85 and stayed up for the rest of the Czechoslovak era.
European nights followed. A run to the quarter-finals of the 1991–92 UEFA Cup remains its best showing in that tournament, and the next season it crushed Fenerbahçe 7–1 in a second-leg meeting, 7–2 overall, before Juventus knocked it out. Finishing second in 1995–96 and fourth in 1998–99 earned further trips abroad, though in October 1999 UEFA fined the club 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters racially abused black players from Real Mallorca.
August 2011 brought a 4 million koruna fine and a nine-point deduction from the Czech football association over corruption. The team still lifted the Czech Cup and the Supercup in 2012, but UEFA barred it from the following Europa League. A 15th-place finish in 2014 ended 30 straight years among the elite. Sigma won the second tier at the first attempt, came back up in 2015, then dropped again after a single season; it now competes once more in the Czech First League.
The record book holds extremes at both ends. The biggest home win was 6–0 against Teplice in 2014–15, and four league games have ended 0–4 in Olomouc's favour on the road, at Liberec, Plzeň, Mladá Boleslav and Dukla. The heaviest defeats were 6–0 at Sparta in 1999–2000 and 0–5 at home to Slavia in 2024–25.
