From Water Utility to Media Giant: The Evolution of a French Corporate Titan
Founded in 1853 as a water supplier for Lyon, Vivendi transformed into a global media powerhouse through aggressive acquisitions and divestments. After decades of shifting between telecommunications, entertainment, and publishing, the company recently completed a massive split to reinvent itself as a streamlined investment firm based in Paris.
Compagnie générale des eaux (CGE) began in 1853 under Napoleon III to provide water services, eventually expanding across Europe to cities like Venice and Istanbul. By the late 1970s, under CEO Guy Dejouany, the firm diversified into waste management, energy, and transport. This pivot accelerated in the 1990s as the company moved into telecommunications and media, founding Canal+ in 1983 and later rebranding as Vivendi in 1998.
The turn of the millennium marked an era of intense, often volatile expansion. In 2000, the merger with Seagram created Vivendi Universal, a massive conglomerate that owned Universal Studios and Universal Music Group. However, the strategy faltered, leading to a €23.3 billion loss in 2002. Under new leadership, the company spent years shedding assets, including its stake in NBCUniversal and its environmental divisions, which became Veolia. This period was defined by high-stakes deals, such as the 2007 merger with Activision and the subsequent 2013 buyout that ended Vivendi's majority control.
In recent years, Vivendi pivoted toward a strategy of becoming an investment company. This culminated in 2024 with a major restructuring that spun off Canal+, Havas, and the Louis Hachette Group into separate entities. By December 2024, shareholders approved this split, allowing the remaining Vivendi SE to focus on its role as an investment firm. This long journey from a 19th-century utility provider to a modern, decentralized investment vehicle reflects the shifting priorities of the global media landscape.
