How a 1999 teen comedy reimagined Shakespeare to become a modern cult classic
In short: Loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You transformed a centuries-old play into a defining 90s teen film. By subverting traditional archetypes and centering a strong-willed, feminist lead, it became a breakthrough for its stars and an enduring touchstone for youth culture.
Development began in November 1997 when screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith sought to adapt a classic work into a contemporary high-school setting. Inspired by the 1995 film Clueless, they settled on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Their goal was to craft a feminist protagonist who defied conventional feminine expectations, a choice that was considered extreme at the time but is now viewed as a progressive subversion of teen movie tropes.
Director Gil Junger, in his debut, prioritized casting lesser-known actors. The search for the lead, Patrick Verona, was exhaustive, with over 1,000 boys auditioning before Heath Ledger was selected just three-and-a-half weeks before filming. Julia Stiles was cast as Kat Stratford after a brief 10-minute meeting with Junger. Principal photography occurred between June and August 1998 in Tacoma and Seattle, utilizing local sites like Stadium High School. The film’s iconic bleacher scene, featuring Ledger singing to Stiles, required only three takes.
Released on March 31, 1999, the film grossed $53.7 million worldwide. While critics like Roger Ebert offered mixed reviews, the film’s screenplay and performances earned widespread praise, eventually securing its status as a cult classic. Its influence persists decades later, from being ranked as a top teen romance by Teen Vogue to being referenced in 2024 pop culture feuds. The film remains a time capsule of 90s fashion and a successful experiment in translating Shakespearean themes for a modern audience.
