In short: In 2011, Alice Walton opened a museum that defied the typical urban gallery model. Instead of a city skyscraper, she placed a massive collection of American art inside a 120-acre Ozark forest ravine. It is a high-concept fusion of landscape architecture and private philanthropy.

Founded by Alice Walton, the daughter of Sam Walton, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art serves as a nonprofit charitable organization. It was established with an initial endowment of approximately $800 million from the Walton Family Foundation to cover construction, acquisitions, and operations. To ensure the museum remains accessible, a $20 million gift from Walmart was specifically designated to provide free general admission for the public.

The museum's physical identity is defined by architect Moshe Safdie, who designed eight interconnected pavilions totaling roughly 200,000 square feet. The structures are integrated into a natural ravine, utilizing materials like architectural concrete, western red cedar, and locally sourced fieldstone. The design even incorporates suspension bridge technology, with foundations stabilized by minipiles anchored directly into the limestone bedrock of the Ozark forest.

The collection spans five centuries of American art, ranging from colonial portraiture to contemporary works. Significant acquisitions include Asher B. Durand's Kindred Spirits (purchased for over $35 million in 2005) and Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed. The museum also manages a complex shared 101-piece Alfred Stieglitz Collection with Fisk University, a partnership born from a 2012 legal settlement that required the works to rotate between the two institutions.

While the museum has been praised for revitalizing downtown Bentonville and increasing public access to art, it has also faced scrutiny. Critics have debated its rural location and the influence of its primary funding sources. Despite these debates, the institution continues to expand, recently opening 'The Momentary' in 2020—a 63,000 square foot contemporary arts venue housed in a converted cheese factory.
