In short: Chen Kaige’s 1993 epic Farewell My Concubine remains a landmark of Chinese cinema. It traces the lives of two Peking opera performers across decades of political upheaval. While it earned international acclaim, including the Palme d'Or, the film faced intense scrutiny and forced edits from Chinese state officials.

The film follows the intertwined lives of Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou, two actors who train together in the 1920s. Their relationship is defined by the opera play that gives the film its title, where Dieyi portrays the concubine to Xiaolou’s king. This professional partnership is complicated by Dieyi’s unrequited love for his stage partner and the arrival of Juxian, a woman who marries Xiaolou. Gong Li, who plays Juxian, portrays a character who is both shrewd and sensitive, ultimately finding herself betrayed during the Cultural Revolution.

Beyond the personal drama, the film serves as a window into the turbulent history of 20th-century China. It explores themes of identity and the blurred lines between performance and reality. The production was a co-venture between mainland China and Hong Kong, premiering in early 1993. Its success was immediate on the global stage, becoming the first Chinese-language film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, an honor it shared with The Piano.

Despite its international triumph, the film’s reception within China was fraught. The Politburo demanded revisions shortly after its release, citing concerns over its depiction of traditional values and political sensitivities. Censors specifically targeted the film's portrayal of gender identity, homosexuality, and the depiction of historical turmoil. By September 1993, the film was permitted for exhibition again, but only after state censors removed 14 minutes of footage. Officials reportedly sought to mitigate international backlash while simultaneously pursuing a bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games in Beijing.
