How a childhood struggle with speech and physical challenges shaped a Bollywood superstar
In short: Born with a physical anomaly and a persistent stammer, Hrithik Roshan overcame early isolation to become one of India's most celebrated actors. His journey from a child actor to a millennial superstar involved rigorous training, intense character preparation, and a resilience that turned personal setbacks into professional triumphs.
Born in 1974 into a prominent film family, Hrithik Roshan faced significant hurdles during his youth. He was born with an extra thumb on his right hand, which caused peers to avoid him, and he struggled with a stammer from the age of six. To manage his speech, he practiced daily therapy and would hide in the bathroom to recite sentences fluently. These early experiences with isolation and insecurity later informed his approach to complex, often vulnerable characters.
His career path was not immediate. Despite early appearances as a child actor in films like Aasha (1980), his father insisted he prioritize his education. In his early 20s, he was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition that threatened his ability to dance or perform stunts. He viewed his eventual recovery—marked by a pivotal moment jogging in the rain—as the turning point of his life. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree while simultaneously training in acting and assisting his father on film sets.
Roshan's breakthrough came with the 2000 film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, which made him an overnight sensation. He quickly established a reputation for versatility, moving between intense dramas like Fiza (2000) and Guzaarish (2010), where he portrayed a quadriplegic, to high-octane action roles in Dhoom 2 (2006) and War (2019). His commitment to his craft is well-documented; for Guzaarish, he spent months with paraplegic patients to understand their needs, and for Super 30 (2019), he hired a trainer to master a specific regional accent.
Despite his success, Roshan has faced numerous physical injuries during his career, including a torn hamstring, broken bones, and a head injury that required brain surgery in 2014. Nevertheless, he remains a dominant force in Hindi cinema, consistently delivering high-grossing performances. His ability to balance commercial appeal with nuanced, character-driven work has cemented his status as a millennial superstar, proving that his early struggles were merely the foundation for his enduring resilience.
