In short: Spanning nearly 3,000 miles from San Francisco to New Jersey, Interstate 80 is more than a highway. It is a massive, deliberate cross-section of North American geology. By following historic trails and mountain passes, this road offers a sound, sweeping experience of the continent's construction, history, and physical components.

Designated in 1956 as a core route of the Interstate Highway System, I-80 stretches 2,900.76 miles across the United States. Its path is deeply rooted in history, tracing the routes of the Oregon and California Trails, the first transcontinental airmail route, and the first transcontinental railroad. The highway was built in segments over three decades, with its final piece completed in 1986 near Salt Lake City—a milestone coincidentally marked near the site of the golden spike that finished the first transcontinental railroad.

The road’s geological significance was famously captured by John McPhee in his Pulitzer Prize-winning work, Annals of the Former World. Guided by geologist Kenneth S. Deffeyes, McPhee explored how the highway traverses diverse terrains, from the morainal till of the Midwest to the fault-block staircases of the Sierra Nevada. It climbs to a maximum elevation of 8,640 feet at Sherman Summit in Wyoming, crosses the desolate Bonneville Salt Flats, and navigates the endorheic Great Divide Basin, where water cannot drain but only evaporate.

While the highway avoids the most dramatic geologic operas like the Grand Canyon, it provides a coherent view of the continent's structural history. It remains a feat of engineering that balances utility with a unique, sprawling perspective on the land. Whether crossing the flat, straight stretches of Nebraska—where one segment remains ideally straight for 72 miles—or winding through the Wasatch Range, I-80 serves as a permanent, ground-level archive of the American landscape.
