How JFK Airport transformed from a golf course into a global architectural landmark
In short: Originally built on the site of the Idlewild Golf Course to relieve overcrowding at LaGuardia, JFK Airport evolved into a sprawling hub of mid-century design. While famous for its massive scale and record-breaking heists, the airport also served as a canvas for iconic architects who redefined the passenger experience.
Opening in 1948 as New York International Airport, the facility was long known as Idlewild. By 1954, it handled the highest volume of international traffic globally. To manage this growth, architect Wallace Harrison moved away from a single terminal plan, instead inviting airlines to commission their own distinct buildings. This competition sparked a golden age of terminal design, resulting in structures like I. M. Pei’s Sundrome and the Worldport, which featured a revolutionary elliptical roof and early jetways.
The most famous of these designs is Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center, completed in 1962. Its winged-bird shape remains a symbol of the jet age. Today, the site lives on as the TWA Hotel, while the airport continues to evolve. Architectural drawings from the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as those by Perkins and Will or the Rambusch Company, document the ongoing efforts to modernize these spaces, reflecting the constant tension between historic design and the demands of modern aviation.
Beyond its aesthetic legacy, JFK has been a site of significant drama. It was the scene of the 1967 Air France robbery and the 1978 Lufthansa heist, the latter netting over $5 million in cash and jewelry. Despite its history of crime and the demolition of many original terminals—including the International Arrivals Building and the Worldport—the airport remains a vital gateway, now hosting the world's longest flight and serving as a primary hub for international travel.
