The actor behind the Punisher once caught for a Russian baseball team
Before he became television's go-to hard man, Jon Bernthal dropped out of college, moved to Moscow to study acting and spent his spare time as a catcher for a professional Russian baseball club. A Harvard theatre director spotted him there, and the path to The Walking Dead began.
A Jewish family in Washington, D.C., welcomed him on September 20, 1976, and he grew up in Cabin John, Maryland. His father Rick practised law at Latham & Watkins and led the Humane Society's board until 2019, while his grandfather Murray Bernthal was a musician and producer. One brother, Nicholas, is an orthopaedic surgeon at UCLA, and another, Thomas, runs a consulting firm and is married to Sheryl Sandberg. By his own account he was a troublemaker at Sidwell Friends School, which he left in 1995.
He started at Skidmore College but quit, and on the suggestion of his acting teacher Alma Becker enrolled at the Moscow Art Theatre School. There the head of Harvard's Institute for Advanced Theater Training noticed him, and he went on to finish a graduate certificate at the American Repertory Theater in 2002. New York theatre followed: more than thirty plays, many with his own now-defunct company, Fovea Floods, plus bit parts in shows such as How I Met Your Mother.
After moving to Los Angeles in 2006 he landed regular roles on short-lived series like The Class and Eastwick. The breakthrough came with Frank Darabont's The Walking Dead, where he played Shane Walsh until 2012. On stage, his work in the 2011 premiere of the dark comedy Small Engine Repair drew praise for its energy and an Ovation Award nomination, though film commitments forced him out of its Off-Broadway transfer.
His signature role arrived in the second season of Daredevil in 2016 as Frank Castle, the Punisher, leading to his own series from 2017 to 2019 and a 2026 Disney+ special he co-wrote. He has worked with directors across genres, appearing in The Wolf of Wall Street and Sicario, and his turn as Michael Berzatto in Hulu's The Bear earned him a Primetime Emmy. In 2026 he made his Broadway debut, starring in Dog Day Afternoon from March to July.
