Cyberpunk 2077 turns the classic hero's journey into a desperate fight for survival
In short: In the dystopian sprawl of Night City, you are not a savior. You are V, a mercenary fighting to reclaim your own mind from a digital ghost. This action role-playing game challenges the genre's tropes, forcing players to navigate a corporatocracy where humanity is just another commodity to be modified.
Set in a future where the United States has crumbled and Japan has emerged as a global superpower, Night City operates as an independent city-state. It is a place where the line between person and product is blurred; citizens frequently undergo heavy cybernetic modification, sometimes to the point of mental instability, known as cyberpsychosis. The city's architecture reflects a history of shifting aesthetics, from the utilitarian Entropism to the opulent Neo-Kitsch, all under the shadow of megacorporations like Arasaka that hold more power than any government.
The core conflict begins with a heist gone wrong, leaving the protagonist, V, with a biochip containing the engram of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rocker and terrorist. As Silverhand’s consciousness slowly overwrites V’s, the player must navigate a web of underworld fixers, nomadic clans, and corporate elites to find a cure. Unlike traditional hero narratives, the game focuses on a personal struggle for existence, with choices that dictate V’s background, dialogue, and ultimately, the nature of their final days.
Development of the game was a massive undertaking, costing between $436 million and $440 million. CD Projekt Red utilized their internal REDengine 4 to render the dense, first-person world, incorporating advanced lighting and ray-tracing technologies. Despite a rocky launch in 2020 that led to legal settlements and temporary removal from digital storefronts, the game has undergone a significant reappraisal. Through subsequent updates, the expansion Phantom Liberty, and the tie-in anime, it has secured its place as one of the best-selling games in history, with over 40 million copies sold by July 2026.
