In short: Before Marvel became a global titan, it was a gamble by a pulp magazine publisher. Martin Goodman recognized the rising tide of superhero popularity and bet on a new company called Timely Comics, forever changing the landscape of American popular culture.

Born Moe Goodman in 1908 to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania, Goodman's early life was defined by hardship. As one of 13 children, he spent his youth traveling across the United States during the Great Depression, living in hobo camps before finding steady work in magazine distribution. By 1932, after a company bankruptcy, he joined forces with investors to form Newsstand Publications Inc., where he began publishing pulp magazines like Western Supernovel Magazine in 1933.

Goodman's editorial portfolio was vast, ranging from science fiction and mystery tales to jungle adventures. He owned numerous titles, often published under the 'Red Circle' mark. However, his most significant move came in 1939 when he founded Timely Comics. This venture was specifically designed to capitalize on the growing demand for superhero stories. The company’s debut, Marvel Comics no. 1 (October 1939), introduced iconic characters like the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner.

The transition from a pulp publisher to a comic book powerhouse required strategic direction. Stan Lee, who served as writer and staff editor, was instructed by Goodman to develop a superhero team rivaling the Justice League. This mandate allowed Lee to introduce an innovative and intelligent line of characters. While Timely used the Marvel name throughout the 1940s and 1950s, it did not officially become the Marvel Comics known today until the early 1960s.

Goodman's legacy is one of industrial scaling. By identifying a niche market for superheroes and providing the corporate structure to expand it, he transformed Timely into one of the era’s largest companies. His journey from a Depression-era traveler to the founder of a cornerstone of modern mythology illustrates the power of recognizing cultural shifts.
