In short: Mehboob Khan began his career as a humble horseshoe repairer in a Bombay stable. Through sheer persistence and an eye for storytelling, he evolved into one of Indian cinema’s most influential directors, pioneering the dacoit genre and creating the social epic Mother India, a landmark that reached the Academy Awards.

Born in 1907 in Bilimora, Gujarat, Mehboob Khan’s journey into film was unconventional. After moving to Bombay, he caught the attention of director Chandrashekhar while working in a stable, eventually transitioning into small studio roles. By 1935, he was directing his own features, such as Al Hilal. His early career spanned the silent era and the formative years of the Sagar Film Company, where he developed a distinct visual style influenced by the lavish production values of Hollywood.

Khan’s impact on the industry was profound, particularly through his ability to blend social commentary with grand entertainment. He founded Mehboob Productions in 1945 and later established the iconic Mehboob Studios in 1954. His filmography includes genre-defining works like Aurat (1940) and its celebrated 1957 remake, Mother India. These films explored recurring themes of rural life, class struggle, and the oppression of the poor. He was also a prolific talent scout, launching the careers of stars like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, and Nargis.

Beyond his creative output, Khan was a central figure in the Indian film establishment. He served as president of the Film Federation of India from 1963 to 1964 and was a jury member at the 1961 Moscow International Film Festival. Though he passed away in 1964, just a day after Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, his legacy endures. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1963 and remains a towering figure whose work bridged the gap between traditional storytelling and modern cinematic spectacle.
