How a research trip to the South Pacific reshaped a Disney blockbuster franchise
In short: What began as a pitch about a demigod evolved into a sprawling cultural phenomenon. By consulting local experts and studying ancient Polynesian navigation, filmmakers transformed a simple animated project into a multi-film franchise that spans live-action remakes, theme park attractions, and a complex, centuries-old historical mystery about oceanic exploration.
The Moana franchise originated from a 2011 pitch by directors Clements and Musker. After failing to secure rights for an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Mort, they turned to Polynesian mythology. Inspired by the demigod Maui, the duo traveled to Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti in 2012. Their research revealed a fascinating historical gap: Polynesian voyaging abruptly ceased three thousand years ago before resuming a millennium later. This mystery, potentially linked to climate-driven shifts in wind and currents, provided the historical backdrop for the fictional island of Motunui, which is also the name of a real islet situated south of Easter Island.
To ensure cultural sensitivity, the production team formed an Oceanic Story Trust. This group of experts reviewed nine versions of the story, successfully lobbying for changes like giving Maui long hair instead of a bald head and removing a scene where the protagonist threw coconuts in a tantrum. This collaborative process reflected the filmmakers' desire to honor the navigational heritage of Pacific peoples, who historically used individual perspective-based systems rather than European cardinal directions to traverse the ocean.
Since the 2016 debut, the franchise has expanded significantly. What was initially planned as a Disney+ musical series was reworked into the 2024 theatrical sequel, Moana 2. Simultaneously, a live-action adaptation starring Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne Johnson was developed, alongside plans for a third animated installment. The franchise has also faced legal challenges, including a 2025 lawsuit seeking $17 billion for alleged idea theft, which was ultimately decided in Disney's favor. Beyond the screen, the brand permeates Disney Parks through attractions like the Journey of Water, while its characters have integrated into broader Disney properties, including the Princess and Villains franchises.
