How Disney’s Moana evolved from a demigod’s solo journey to a story of self-discovery
In short: When directors John Musker and Ron Clements began researching Polynesian mythology in 2011, they initially planned a film centered entirely on the demigod Maui. However, their research trips across the South Pacific inspired a shift toward a young, strong-willed heroine, ultimately resulting in the 2016 animated success, Moana.
The development of Moana was a complex, five-year process that saw the story undergo nine major iterations. Early drafts featured Moana as the only daughter among several brothers, a gender-based dynamic that was eventually discarded to focus on her personal journey. Other discarded concepts included a plot where Moana sought to rescue her father, Tui, after he was lost at sea. The character of the grandmother, Tala, was introduced later as a mentor figure to bridge the gap between Moana and ancient traditions, a role that became central to the film's emotional core.
To ensure cultural sensitivity, the filmmakers recruited an Oceanic Story Trust, a group of experts from across the South Pacific. This collaboration proved vital; the Trust successfully pushed for changes such as giving Maui long hair rather than the bald design initially proposed. The production team also consulted the Polynesian Voyaging Society to ensure that material culture, such as ship parts, was rendered with historical accuracy. This commitment to detail extended to the casting, with the majority of the voice actors, including Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, being of Polynesian descent.
The film is set approximately 2,000 years ago, a period when Pacific voyaging traditions had resumed after a mysterious thousand-year hiatus. While the exact cause of this historical pause remains unknown, scholars have suggested climate change and shifting wind patterns as potential factors. By setting the story in this era, the filmmakers honored the rich navigational heritage of the Pacific, where indigenous people possessed advanced geographical knowledge based on individual perspective long before the arrival of European explorers.
