From an open Twitter casting call to winning the Laurence Olivier Award for acting
In short: Rachel Zegler’s rapid ascent from a New Jersey high school student to a global star is defined by unconventional breakthroughs. Selected from over 30,000 applicants for her film debut, she has navigated the complexities of modern fame, high-stakes franchise roles, and the intense scrutiny of the digital age.
Born in 2001, Rachel Zegler’s trajectory shifted in 2018 when she responded to Steven Spielberg’s Twitter casting call for West Side Story. Her performance as Maria earned her a Golden Globe, making her the youngest winner and the first of Colombian descent in that category. This early success propelled her into major franchise roles, including Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and the titular role in the 2025 live-action Snow White.
Zegler’s career is marked by a seamless transition between film and stage. She made her Broadway debut as Juliet in 2024 and her West End debut as Eva Perón in Evita in 2025, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for the latter. Her work often invites intense public discourse; the production of Snow White, for instance, faced boycott calls linked to her casting, her public critiques of the original film, and the political views of her co-star, Gal Gadot.
Beyond her performances, Zegler has frequently navigated the pressures of public life. She has been vocal about her support for Palestine and her criticism of Donald Trump, actions that have occasionally led to friction with studio leadership and public backlash. Despite these challenges, she continues to balance high-profile projects, such as her upcoming concert series at @sohoplace and her expected Broadway transfer of Evita in 2027, while maintaining a career that bridges the gap between traditional theater and modern digital-era stardom.
