From Child Star to Governor: The Unlikely Political Ascent of Rano Karno
In short: Born into poverty, Rano Karno rose to fame as a child actor before becoming a prominent Indonesian politician. His career spans over 70 films and multiple high-level government roles, making him the first official to be elected as a governor or vice governor in two different Indonesian provinces.
Born in 1960 to actor Sukarno M. Noor, Rano Karno grew up in Central Jakarta facing significant financial hardship. His early life was defined by poverty, with his family often struggling to afford basic necessities. Seeking refuge from these conditions, Karno frequented a local library, where he developed a deep appreciation for Indonesian literature and traditional folktales. This literary knowledge unexpectedly launched his acting career at age ten when he corrected a director on the details of the story during an audition for the film Malin Kundang.
Karno’s acting career flourished throughout the 1970s, marked by roles in films like Si Doel Anak Betawi and Gita Cinta dari SMA. By 1990, he transitioned into directing, creating the highly successful serial Si Doel Anak Sekolahan, which defied initial studio skepticism regarding its provincial themes. His artistic contributions earned him multiple accolades, including Citra Awards for Best Child Actor and Best Actor, as well as international recognition at the Asia Pacific Film Festival.
His political career began in 1997 with the People's Consultative Assembly, followed by a role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Karno’s executive path included serving as deputy regent of Tangerang and later as governor of Banten after Ratu Atut Chosiyah was arrested for graft. His unique political trajectory culminated in his 2025 appointment as vice governor of Jakarta. Having acted in over 70 films, Karno remains a rare figure who successfully bridged the gap between the entertainment industry and high-level governance in Indonesia.
