Before he was Australia's most famous fictional resident, Ray Meagher was a state-level rugby player.
In short: Ray Meagher is best known for portraying Alf Stewart on Home and Away for over 37 years, a role that earned him a Guinness World Record. Yet, before his record-breaking television career, Meagher was a formidable athlete who represented Queensland in rugby union at the senior level during the late 1960s.
Born in Roma, Queensland, in 1944, Meagher’s path to fame was unconventional. After attending boarding school, he excelled as a sportsman, eventually playing first five-eighth for Queensland. His athletic career included a match against France, showcasing a high level of competitive skill before he transitioned into the arts. By the mid-1970s, he had pivoted to acting, initially appearing in television programs like the folk music series Around Folk and the soap opera Number 96.
Early in his acting career, Meagher was frequently typecast as a villain or a tough, ruthless character. He played various antagonists in the series Prisoner and appeared as an evil cattle-rustler in the miniseries A Fortunate Life. His versatility was evident in his ability to portray both heavy, intimidating figures and more nuanced roles, such as the alcoholic pub owner in A Country Practice. His performance in the 1984 telemovie Mail Order Bride earned him a Penguin Award for Best Lead Actor.
In 1987, Meagher joined the cast of Home and Away, debuting as Alf Stewart in the show's first episode in January 1988. This role defined his career, making him the longest-serving actor in an Australian serial. Beyond television, Meagher has enjoyed a successful stage career, including roles in the West End production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and various British Christmas pantomimes. His status as a cultural icon was solidified by his 2010 Gold Logie win for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, an award he secured again in 2018.
