How stolen yacht club booze launched a legendary American comedy career
In short: Before he became a staple of cult television and film, Ken Marino secured his social standing at NYU with a haul of pilfered alcohol. This unconventional icebreaker helped him befriend future collaborators, ultimately leading to the formation of the influential sketch comedy troupe The State and a prolific career in Hollywood.
Born on Long Island in 1968, Kenneth Joseph Marino began his path to comedy at New York University. On his first day, he met David Wain and Craig Wedren, quickly establishing a bond that would define his professional life. Marino’s early popularity was bolstered by a supply of alcoholic beverages he had liberated from a yacht club during a summer job, which he carried in milk crates to visit fellow students. This camaraderie laid the foundation for The New Group, a comedy troupe that would evolve into the iconic MTV series The State.
Following his time on The State, which aired from 1993 to 1995, Marino built a versatile career across television and film. He appeared in cult classics like Wet Hot American Summer and starred in series such as Party Down, Childrens Hospital, and The Other Two. His work often intersects with his long-time collaborators; he has frequently written, produced, and acted in projects alongside David Wain, including the films The Ten, Role Models, and Wanderlust. Beyond acting, Marino has established himself as a director, helming episodes for shows like The Goldbergs and all three seasons of the web series Burning Love, which was created by his wife, Erica Oyama.
Marino’s career remains remarkably varied, spanning from mobster roles in Marvel's Agent Carter to comedic turns in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the Netflix film The Babysitter. He continues to explore new creative outlets, serving as the lead singer for the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band alongside Wain. As of fall 2026, he is set to make his stage debut in the national tour of Death Becomes Her. His trajectory from a student with stolen crates to a seasoned industry veteran highlights the enduring power of the creative partnerships he forged during his college years.
