From assistant director to blockbuster hits: the rise of Ali Abbas Zafar
In short: Ali Abbas Zafar has become a powerhouse in Indian cinema, moving from supporting roles at Yash Raj Films to directing massive commercial successes. His filmography spans high-stakes action thrillers and sports dramas, often featuring major stars like Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif to capture global audiences.
Zafar’s career trajectory is defined by a steady ascent through the Indian film industry. He began his journey as an assistant director, working on multiple projects for the prominent production company Yash Raj Films (YRF). He made his directorial and screenwriting debut in 2011 with the romantic comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, a film centered on a complicated love triangle involving characters played by Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Ali Zafar.
His ability to direct large-scale commercial hits became evident with films like the 2014 action drama Gunday, set in Calcutta during the 1970s and 1980s, and the 2016 sports drama Sultan. Sultan, which featured Salman Khan as a wrestler from Haryana and Anushka Sharma, became one of the highest-grossing Indian films. Zafar’s collaboration with Khan continued with the 2017 action thriller Tiger Zinda Hai, a sequel to the 2012 film Ek Tha Tiger. This sequel, which follows a rescue mission to free 40 nurses—consisting of 25 Indians and 15 Pakistanis—became a major commercial success and one of the highest-grossing films of its year.
In recent years, Zafar has diversified into producing and streaming content. He produced the action-comedy Khaali Peeli in 2020 and moved into OTT releases, including the political drama Tandav for Amazon Prime in 2021 and the Netflix series Jogi in 2022. While his 2024 sci-fi action film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan faced critical and commercial failure, Zafar continues to work on new ventures, including a forthcoming romantic action thriller tentatively titled Fearless, which will mark his return to collaborating with Yash Raj Films.
