A high-stakes gamble on a gangster comedy yields massive returns
In short: How does a film about college students befriending a local gangster become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of 2024? By blending black comedy with a heavy dose of 'masala' entertainment, Aavesham turned a specific cultural dynamic into a commercial powerhouse.
Aavesham (transl. Excitement) is a 2024 Malayalam-language black comedy action film directed by Jithu Madhavan. While some early reports suggested it was a spin-off of his previous work, Romancham (2022), Madhavan clarified that it is a standalone production. The film follows three aeronautical engineering students in Bengaluru who seek revenge on a bully by befriending Ranjith "Ranga" Gangadharan, an eccentric and powerful local gangster.
The production faced significant hurdles before its release. Principal photography began in May 2023, but the theatrical debut was pushed from late 2023 to April 11, 2024, to optimize for the Eid al-Fitr and Vishu weekends. The film also navigated a brief distribution dispute with PVR INOX chains over Virtual Print Fees, which saw the movie pulled from multiplexes just before its release date.
Despite these logistical challenges, the film was a massive commercial success. Produced on a budget of ₹30 crore, it grossed over ₹156 crore, making it one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2024. Critics noted that lead actor Fahadh Faasil used the role of Ranga to showcase his ability to handle 'mass' characters, utilizing a loud persona and a unique linguistic blend of Malayalam and Kannada.
The narrative explores the complex bond between the students and Ranga, who initially adheres to a vow of non-violence made to his late mother. The story takes a dark turn when the boys discover a corpse in Ranga’s house—his own brother, whom he had killed and buried years prior. This discovery leads to a climactic rampage where Ranga breaks his vow to eliminate an old rival, ultimately choosing to protect the boys despite their betrayal.
