In short: What happens when a clandestine spy trades a life of espionage for a quiet existence in Miami? In the 2017 film A Gentleman, a retired agent must navigate the ultimate undercover operation: living as a man who doesn't exist, while his past threatens to dismantle his new reality.

The narrative centers on Rishi Purohit, a clandestine spy for the espionage organization Unit X. After a mission in Bangkok in 2012 involving the extraction of intelligence from the Chinese Embassy, Rishi seeks retirement. However, his superior, Colonel Vijay Saxena, forces him into one final job: spying on India's Defense Secretary, Mishra. During this operation, Rishi encounters Gaurav Kapoor, a database manager for a weapons company in Miami. When Gaurav is murdered by a teammate named Yakub to eliminate evidence, Rishi assumes Gaurav's identity to escape pursuit and seek a peaceful life in the United States.

The tension of the film arises from the collision of these two lives. While living as Gaurav, Rishi is forced back into action when his past catches up with him. He discovers that the data he retrieved actually contains evidence of illegal financial transactions between a weapons company, Norcorp, and Indian politicians.

The plot thickens as it is revealed that the original target, Gaurav, had attempted to sell this data to Mishra for money. Rishi must navigate a web of betrayal involving his former commander, his own teammates, and the very people he was trying to leave behind. Despite its commercial status as a 'disaster' in some circles, the film is noted for its complex narrative structure. It was originally envisioned as a sequel to the 2014 film Bang Bang! before being redeveloped into a standalone project. The production faced hurdles, including the cancellation of an international shooting schedule in late 2016, before finally releasing on August 25, 2017. It serves as a study of the 'masala' genre—blending action, comedy, and high-stakes espionage into a single cinematic experience.
