The 1998 NFL Draft remains a legendary case study in scouting and career trajectory
In short: The 1998 NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting is remembered for the high-stakes debate between two quarterbacks: Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. While both were viewed as franchise-altering talents, their professional paths diverged sharply, cementing the event as a defining moment in the history of professional football scouting and team building.
Held over two days in mid-April 1998 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, the event centered on the Indianapolis Colts' decision regarding the first overall pick. Media speculation focused on whether the team would choose Manning, a mature and polished prospect from the University of Tennessee, or Leaf, a Washington State standout with a powerful arm and high physical upside. The Colts ultimately selected Manning, while the San Diego Chargers traded significant assets to the Arizona Cardinals to secure the second pick, which they used to draft Leaf.
The subsequent careers of these two players offer a stark contrast. Manning became the most decorated player in league history, earning five Most Valuable Player awards, winning two Super Bowls—one with the Colts in 2006 and another with the Denver Broncos in 2015—and gaining induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021. Conversely, Leaf struggled significantly, finishing his career with a 4–17 record as a starter across stints with the Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Seattle Seahawks. He was out of the league by 2002 and is widely regarded as one of the most notable draft failures in the sport.
Beyond the top two picks, the 1998 draft produced several other future Hall of Famers. The Minnesota Vikings selected wide receiver Randy Moss 21st overall, while the Oakland Raiders took cornerback Charles Woodson at number four and the Pittsburgh Steelers chose guard Alan Faneca at number 26. Moss, Woodson, and Faneca were all eventually enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with Moss inducted in 2018 and the others joining in 2021. The draft also featured a supplemental selection process in the summer, where teams like the Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers utilized second-round picks to acquire additional talent.
