A psychological thriller that turns a baby monitor into a source of dread
In short: When Jenny hears a man's voice crying through her daughter's baby monitor at exactly 2:22 am, she is convinced her new London home is haunted. But as tensions rise during a dinner party, the line between supernatural activity and psychological breakdown begins to blur in this chilling West End hit.
Danny Robins' thriller, 2:22 A Ghost Story, premiered in London's West End in August 2021 at the Noël Coward Theatre. The play follows Jenny and her husband Sam, who are renovating a large house in Greater London. Jenny becomes increasingly distressed by strange noises and a man's voice heard via the baby monitor at 2:22 am, while the sceptical Sam insists there are logical explanations for the occurrences. The production originally starred Lily Allen as Jenny, alongside Julia Chan, Hadley Fraser, and Jake Wood. This initial West End run was directed by Matthew Dunster and featured set designs by Anna Fleischle.
The narrative tension escalates during a dinner party with friends Lauren and Ben. As the group explores the supernatural through a seance, the evening turns volatile, involving a kitchen fire and a confession regarding a toy drenched in white spirit. The play's climax reveals a devastating twist: Sam had actually died on a rural island, and the voice heard through the monitor was his attempt to make a final call to Jenny at exactly 2:22 am. During the seance, the table began to move abruptly towards Sam, which subsequently caused a kitchen fire. This chaotic event occurred after Ben suggested the group contact the spirit to identify a relative in the room.
The production has seen significant success, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best New Play in 2022. While critics like Kate Wyver have praised the play's ability to build mounting dread without relying on graphic gore, others have noted its reliance on psychological tension rather than traditional horror tropes. The play has since seen multiple West End engagements and international productions in locations including Los Angeles, Melbourne, Singapore, and Prague. The play has enjoyed various international runs, including a production in Australia and a non-replica staging in Singapore. It is also scheduled for an Off-Broadway premiere at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2026.
