The day Tamil Nadu's political landscape fractured into a hung assembly
In short: In 2006, the traditional dominance of Tamil Nadu's two major Dravidian parties faced a structural shift. For the first time since 1952, no single party secured a majority, forcing a veteran leader to navigate a complex web of alliances to form a minority government.
The 2006 Legislative Assembly election was a watershed moment for Tamil Nadu's political mechanics. While the state has historically been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, this election saw the emergence of a 'third alternative.' The actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth debuted his party, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Although the DMDK won only one seat—contested by Vijayakanth himself in the Vridhachalam constituency—it significantly disrupted the status quo by cutting into the vote shares of both major rivals. The results created a hung assembly, a rarity for the state. The DMK emerged as the single-largest party with 96 seats, but fell short of the 117 seats required for a simple majority. This forced M. Karunanidhi, then 82 years old, to form a minority government. He secured his fifth and final term as Chief Minister through an alliance with the Indian National Congress, the Left parties (CPI and CPI(M)), and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). This coalition was notable because it included former allies of the AIADMK, who had been voted out of power. The election also showcased significant shifts in party loyalty and voter behavior. The AIADMK, led by Jayalalithaa, managed to capture 7 of the 14 seats in the Chennai City stronghold—a feat even the legendary M.G. Ramachandran had failed to achieve. Furthermore, the voter turnout reached 70.70%, an 11% increase from 2001, marking the highest participation since 1991. These shifts highlighted a diversifying electorate that was beginning to look beyond the traditional binary of Dravidian politics.
