In short: Held from August 5 to 21, 2016, the Rio Games broke geographic barriers as the first Summer Olympics in the Southern Hemisphere since 2000 and the first ever in a Portuguese-speaking nation. Beyond the records, the event transformed Rio’s urban landscape through massive infrastructure projects and sustainable design initiatives.

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially branded as Rio 2016, represented a significant logistical and cultural undertaking. With 11,238 athletes from 207 nations participating, the Games featured 306 sets of medals across 28 sports. This edition was notable for the inclusion of rugby sevens and golf, which had been added to the program in 2009. The event was the first to take place under the presidency of Thomas Bach, with the opening ceremony presided over by acting Brazilian president Michel Temer.

The host city selection process, which began in 2007, saw Rio de Janeiro emerge victorious over Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo during the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009. The Games were distributed across four clusters in Rio—Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã—with additional football matches held in five other Brazilian cities. To support the event, the city underwent the Porto Maravilha urban revitalization project, which included 70 km of new roads and extensive public network upgrades.

Sustainability was a core theme of the Games, reflected in the design of the medals and the podiums. The medals, produced by the Brazilian National Mint, utilized recycled materials and followed strict sustainability criteria, such as mercury-free gold extraction. Similarly, the podiums were constructed from organic materials and foliage, designed to be repurposed as furniture after the closing ceremony. Despite these efforts, the event faced challenges, including the resignation of key organizing committee officials and reports of medal degradation, which affected approximately 6 to 7 percent of the awards.
