Argentina hosts the 2026 South American Games across three major provincial cities
In short: The XIII South American Games transformed Argentina into a continental stage this September. Spanning Rosario, Santa Fe, and Rafaela, the event served as a critical gateway for athletes aiming to secure their spots at the upcoming 2027 Pan American Games in Peru. It was a massive display of regional athletic ambition.
Held from September 12 to 26, 2026, these Games marked the third time Argentina has hosted the competition, following previous iterations in 1982 and 2006. The event was a collaborative effort involving the South American Sports Organization, the national government, the Argentine Olympic Committee, and local provincial authorities. The opening ceremony at the National Flag Memorial in Rosario set a festive tone, featuring a lineup of local musicians and the official anthem, Late el Sur, composed by Soledad Pastorutti.
The competitive program was expansive, featuring 43 distinct sports. This edition saw the debut of surfing and sport climbing, while other disciplines like softball, modern pentathlon, racquetball, and Basque pelota returned to the schedule. Notably, softball had been absent since 2010. Organizers also integrated esports and padel as official sports for the first time, moving them beyond their former status as demonstration events. Meanwhile, several sports, including futsal and basketball, were excluded from the program, and cricket was removed shortly before the start due to insufficient team participation.
The geographic footprint of the Games extended well beyond the primary host cities. While most competitions occurred in Rosario, Santa Fe, and Rafaela, the organizers utilized specialized venues elsewhere to accommodate specific needs. Bowling was held in Vicente López Partido, surfing took place in Mar del Plata, and softball was hosted in Paraná. Beyond the official medal events, the program included exhibition matches for chess, billiards, and mixed martial arts, reflecting a diverse approach to regional sports culture. With 26 of the contested sports acting as qualifiers for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, the stakes for participants remained high throughout the two-week period.
