The only Republican flip in a year of Democratic losses
In short: In 2020, while Democrats held onto most of their Senate seats nationwide, Alabama became the sole exception. The state’s heavy Republican lean turned the race into a landslide for Tommy Tuberville, marking one of the most significant shifts in modern American electoral history.
The 2020 election saw incumbent Senator Doug Jones face a formidable challenge from former Auburn Tigers football coach Tommy Tuberville. Analysts had identified Jones as the most vulnerable senator seeking re-election that year, largely because his previous victory in a 2017 special election was viewed as an anomaly. That earlier win was heavily influenced by sexual misconduct allegations against his then-opponent, Roy Moore, which led many prominent Republicans to rescind their endorsements. By contrast, Tuberville ran without such controversies and benefited from high Republican turnout. He secured a 20.36% margin of defeat for Jones—the largest loss for an incumbent U.S. Senator since Blanche Lincoln in 2010. Additionally, since 1964, no other challenger has secured a larger share of the total votes than Tuberville.
While Jones managed to outperform President Joe Biden by about five points in the state, he was only able to win the 13 counties that Biden won in the concurrent presidential election. The shift was geographically distinct: while Jones maintained support in urban centers like Jefferson and Montgomery counties, Tuberville dominated rural areas. He successfully flipped 12 counties that Jones had won in 2017. This overwhelming win stemmed from Alabama's political bias plus Jones' notable opposition to Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, alongside his support for Donald Trump's first impeachment conviction.
The race serves as a case study in how personal controversies can temporarily disrupt long-term political trends. While the 2017 special election provided a brief window for Democratic representation in Alabama, the 2020 results demonstrated a swift return to the state's traditional Republican lean once those specific external factors were removed.
