The 2025 NBA Draft defied odds and set a historic precedent for green room invites
In short: The 79th NBA draft was defined by a statistical anomaly and a shift in how talent is showcased. While the Dallas Mavericks secured the top pick against 1.8% odds, the league introduced a mid-draft innovation for green room invitees that resulted in an unprecedented outcome for a prospect.
The 2025 NBA draft, held over two nights at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, consisted of 59 selections. The reduction from the standard 60 picks occurred because the New York Knicks forfeited a second-round selection due to a 2022 free agency violation. The event was governed by the 2023 collective bargaining agreement, which mandates that all participants must reach their 19th birthday within the calendar year of the draft, effectively requiring a birth date on or before December 31, 2006.
A major narrative of the event was the Dallas Mavericks' selection of Cooper Flagg from Duke University as the first overall pick. The Mavericks achieved this position despite having only a 1.8% chance of winning the draft lottery. They secured the top spot after winning a coin toss against the Chicago Bulls, who had finished the regular season with an identical record. Meanwhile, the pool of early entry candidates reached a decade-long low, with only 46 players remaining available after a series of withdrawals.
The league also experimented with its green room protocol. After the first three waves of invitations resulted in all 24 players being selected in the first round, the NBA issued a fourth wave of invitations on June 26. This mid-draft expansion brought the total number of invites to 36. This change led to a historic first: Izan Almansa became the first green room invitee to go undrafted, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the modern draft process.
