The darkest day in modern Thai history: A nursery turned into a massacre
In short: On October 6, 2022, a routine afternoon at a children's nursery in Nong Bua Lamphu province ended in tragedy. In a swift and violent rampage, a single perpetrator killed 37 people—including 24 children—marking the deadliest mass murder by an individual in Thailand's modern history.
The attack began at approximately 12:50 ICT when 34-year-old Panya Khamrab arrived at a nursery in the Uthai Sawan subdistrict. Carrying a knife, a shotgun, and a lawfully acquired SIG Sauer P365 9mm semi-automatic handgun, Khamrab aimed at employees prior to moving into a chamber containing 30 sleeping children. The resulting carnage left 19 boys and three girls dead within the nursery building alone. The violence extended beyond the facility as Khamrab fled in a white Toyota Hilux Revo, using it to ram bystanders and shoot others across multiple districts.
Khamrab's background reveals a complex web of personal and systemic failures. A former police sergeant who graduated with a law degree, he was dismissed from the force in late 2021 or June 2022 due to methamphetamine addiction and violent behavior. Despite his history of drug use—for which he had been arrested in January 2022—autopsies found no drugs in his system 72 hours before the attack. He was reportedly plagued by marital discord, financial instability, and erratic mood swings, having even threatened a bank manager with a firearm previously.
The massacre prompted immediate national and international responses. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered a crackdown on gun ownership and drug use, while King Vajiralongkorn took the victims under royal patronage to cover funeral and medical costs. The event remains a haunting benchmark for violence in Thailand, surpassing the death toll of the 2020 Nakhon Ratchasima shootings. It serves as a grim reminder of how personal instability and easy access to firearms can create catastrophic outcomes in vulnerable community spaces.
While police have not established a singular motive, various factors are under scrutiny, including Khamrab's recent job rejection from the same organization that housed the nursery. Reports also suggest potential grievances regarding his stepson being bullied at the facility and local social shunning of his girlfriend. These layers of perceived injustice, combined with untreated mental illness and substance abuse, highlight a multifaceted crisis of social and individual breakdown.
