How a major structural overhaul redefined Europe's secondary football tournament in 2021
In short: The 2021–22 season marked a pivotal shift for the UEFA Europa League. With the introduction of the Europa Conference League, the tournament underwent a significant format reduction, shrinking its group stage and altering qualification paths. This transformation fundamentally changed how clubs navigated the road to the final in Seville.
The 2021–22 campaign was the 51st iteration of Europe's secondary club competition and the 13th under its current branding. This season stood out as the first since 1999–2000 to feature three distinct continental club tournaments simultaneously. To accommodate the new UEFA Europa Conference League, officials streamlined the Europa League, cutting the group stage from 48 teams to 32. This change also simplified the knockout phase, allowing group winners to bypass the initial knockout round and advance directly to the round of 16.
Beyond structural changes, the tournament saw a historic shift in rules. On 24 June 2021, UEFA abolished the away goals rule, a fixture of European competition since 1965. Under the new protocol, aggregate ties ending in a deadlock were resolved by 30 minutes of extra time, followed by a penalty shoot-out if necessary. This shift aimed to create a more straightforward path to victory, removing the tactical influence of goals scored on the road.
The competition drew 58 teams from 33 different UEFA member associations. Qualification was determined by UEFA country coefficients, with specific slots allocated based on performance from 2015–16 to 2019–20. Eintracht Frankfurt ultimately secured the title, defeating Rangers in a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw in the final. This victory earned the German club a spot in the 2022–23 Champions League group stage and a place in the 2022 UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.
The season also highlighted the complexities of European football logistics. While the final was held in Seville, Spain, the original plan had been to host it in Budapest, Hungary, before pandemic-related shifts pushed that venue to 2023. The tournament's evolution reflects a broader effort by UEFA to balance the competitive landscape across three tiers of continental play, ensuring that even as the structure grows more complex, the path to the trophy remains a test of endurance and tactical adaptability.
