In short: The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham marked a milestone for inclusivity, featuring more women's events than men's. While the Games contributed £1.2 billion to the UK economy, the legacy of the athlete's village and local infrastructure has faced significant financial and logistical hurdles.

Held between 28 July and 8 August 2022, the XXII Commonwealth Games brought 4,822 athletes from 72 associations to the West Midlands and London. It was a landmark edition, featuring the largest integrated parasports programme in the event's history, with eight distinct parasports included. Notably, it was the first major multi-sport event where women's events outnumbered men's.

The competition saw Australia dominate the medal standings, securing 67 gold medals and 179 total medals. The host, England, finished second with 58 golds and 176 total medals, while Canada took third with 26 golds and 92 total medals. In a historic moment for the islands, Niue secured its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal.

The event's planning was marked by significant shifts. Originally, Durban, South Africa, was the sole bidder, but the CGF stripped the city of hosting rights in March 2017 due to financial concerns. Birmingham was eventually selected on 21 December 2017. The Games also served as the final major multi-sport event held during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away one month after the closing ceremonies.

However, the legacy of the Games has been complicated. The planned athlete's village in Perry Barr, intended to provide 1,400 homes, fell behind schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2023, the site remained uninhabited, and by 2024, the council expected a £320 million loss after deciding to sell most homes to a private developer.
