Nadal secures his 22nd major title at the 2022 French Open
In short: Rafael Nadal dominated the 2022 French Open, extending his record-breaking dominance on clay. By defeating Casper Ruud in the final, he secured his 14th title at Roland Garros and his 22nd major overall, marking the final ATP Tour-level singles title of his career.
The 2022 French Open men's singles tournament was defined by Rafael Nadal's historic performance. Nadal defeated Casper Ruud in the final with a decisive 6–3, 6–3, 6–0 victory. This win marked Nadal's 14th French Open title and his 22nd major title overall, which also served as his 92nd and final ATP Tour-level singles title. Notably, Nadal became the third man to defeat four top-10 players during a major tournament since ATP rankings were introduced in 1973, joining Mats Wilander and Roger Federer.
The tournament also saw significant shifts in the ATP rankings. While Novak Djokovic entered as the defending champion, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Nadal in their 59th encounter. This match was their tenth meeting at the French Open, setting an Open Era record for two players in a single tournament. Following the tournament, the top of the rankings saw a major reshuffle: Daniil Medvedev reclaimed the number one spot after points from the previous year's tournament were dropped on 13 June 2022, while Alexander Zverev rose to world No. 2. This ended the long-standing streak of the 'Big Three' occupying the top two spots, a position they had held since 10 November 2003.
Other notable milestones included Casper Ruud becoming the first Norwegian man to reach a major quarterfinal or better, surpassing his father Christian. Furthermore, Holger Rune achieved the distinction of being the inaugural Danish male to enter a major singles quarterfinal during the Open Era. The tournament also introduced a new rule: the first edition to feature a 10-point tiebreak in the fifth set when games reached 6–6, first contested by Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Aslan Karatsev.
