In short: In 2017, XXXTentacion abandoned the aggressive, distorted sounds of the Florida rap scene. Instead, he released 17: a brief, genre-defying collection of lo-fi, piano-driven tracks designed specifically as an entry point for those navigating depression and loss.

Released on August 25, 2017, through Bad Vibes Forever and Empire Distribution, 17 was a departure from the 'turn-up' style popular in the artist's native Florida. Rather than relying on heavy distortion, the album utilized acoustic guitars, piano, and samples from Shiloh Dynasty to explore themes of infidelity, failed relationships, and suicide. Despite a lack of radio airplay and limited media promotion, the album performed well commercially, entering the US Billboard 200 at number two with 87,000 album-equivalent units.

The album's sonic palette was highly experimental, blending elements of emo, indie rock, grunge, and alternative R&B. Critics noted this 'rock & roll twist on hip-hop,' with some describing the composition as a 'progressive' and 'genre-defiant' emotional rollercoaster. This stylistic shift was reflected in the singles; while 'Revenge' served as the lead, tracks like 'Jocelyn Flores' and 'Fuck Love' (featuring Trippie Redd) also saw significant chart success, even reaching the top 100 of the UK Singles Chart.

Despite the controversy surrounding the artist's personal life and a widely criticized Instagram teaser involving a simulated hanging, the album's impact was global. It reached number one in Norway and charted highly across Europe, including Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The RIAA eventually certified the album double platinum in the United States, and the artist was posthumously honored with the Favourite Soul/R&B Album award at the 2018 American Music Awards.
