In short: Formed in 1996, the band 3 Doors Down took their name from a damaged building sign in Foley, Alabama. The trio of Mississippi natives rose to fame with their debut single, Kryptonite, eventually becoming one of the most successful rock acts of the early 2000s through relentless touring and chart-topping hits.

The band originated in Escatawpa, Mississippi, founded by Brad Arnold, Matt Roberts, and Todd Harrell. While traveling through Foley, Alabama, the group noticed a sign missing several letters, leaving only the words Doors Down. Because the band consisted of three members at the time, they added the number 3 to the front. Their breakthrough came quickly; Arnold wrote their signature song, Kryptonite, while sitting in a high school math class at age 15.

Their debut album, The Better Life, released in 2000, achieved massive commercial success, eventually reaching septuple platinum status in the United States. The band maintained this momentum throughout the decade, with albums like Seventeen Days and their self-titled 2008 release both debuting at the top of the Billboard 200. Beyond their music, the band established The Better Life Foundation in 2003, a charity that provided significant aid to Gulf Coast communities following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The group faced significant internal challenges over the years. Bassist Todd Harrell departed in 2014 following legal issues, and original guitarist Matt Roberts passed away in 2016 due to a prescription drug overdose. The band's history concluded with the death of lead singer Brad Arnold in 2026, who succumbed to Stage IV clear-cell renal-cell carcinoma. Despite these losses, the band remained a fixture in American rock, known for their conservative roots and frequent performances for military personnel.
