Team World secured a crushing victory at the 2023 Laver Cup in Vancouver
In short: The sixth edition of the Laver Cup saw a lopsided result, with Team World securing their second consecutive title. Held at the Rogers Arena in Canada, the tournament featured a unique scoring system that escalated in value over three days, ultimately leading to a dominant 13–2 finish against Team Europe.
The 2023 Laver Cup, held from 22 to 24 September in Vancouver, Canada, showcased a distinct format where match points increased daily. Victories on the first day were worth one point, rising to two points on the second day and three points on the final day. The tournament rules dictate that the first team to reach 13 points claims the title, a threshold Team World surpassed with ease during this edition.
The path to the tournament was marked by several roster adjustments. Team World, captained by John McEnroe, saw early commitments from players like Félix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe. Although Nick Kyrgios initially announced his participation in April, he withdrew by August. Team Europe, led by Björn Borg, faced significant challenges as well; both Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas were forced to withdraw due to injuries just before the event began, necessitating last-minute replacements in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Arthur Fils.
The final line-ups were solidified by late August, with Team Europe adding Hubert Hurkacz and Gaël Monfils, while Team World rounded out their squad with Tommy Paul, Francisco Cerúndolo, and Ben Shelton. Milos Raonic also joined the Team World camp as an alternate in mid-September. The event concluded so decisively that only one match was required on the final day to determine the winner. Following the trophy ceremony, an exhibition doubles match was held to round out the event, highlighting the unique, team-oriented nature of this competition that pits European talent against the rest of the world.
