In short: The 2023 Tripura Legislative Assembly election saw the Bharatiya Janata Party secure a majority, but the real story was the emergence of the Tipra Motha Party. By championing indigenous autonomy and the demand for Tipraland, this new force disrupted traditional power dynamics and fundamentally altered the state's electoral calculations.

The 2023 election, held on 16 February, was defined by a complex web of alliances and shifting loyalties. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully retained power, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) made a significant debut, securing 13 seats and establishing itself as the largest opposition party. This rise followed the TMP's earlier success in the 2021 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, where it outperformed both the BJP and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Central to the political discourse was the demand for 'Tipraland,' a separate state for the Kokborok-speaking population within the TTAADC regions. Although the BJP government consistently rejected the bifurcation of the state, the issue remained a potent rallying cry. The TMP's influence was further bolstered by its support for the 10,323 teachers who were terminated following a 2017 court ruling. These teachers, who had previously supported the BJP in 2018, became a symbol of political disillusionment, with the Left Front and the TMP both promising their reinstatement.

The opposition landscape was equally fractured. The CPI(M) and the Indian National Congress formed a seat-sharing agreement in a bid to defeat the incumbent BJP, though initial talks with the TMP failed due to ideological differences. Meanwhile, the BJP navigated its own internal challenges, including the resignation of several MLAs in 2022 and ongoing debates regarding the state's future. As the dust settled on 2 March 2023, the results reflected a state caught between the promises of the ruling party and the rising aspirations of indigenous groups seeking greater autonomy.
