The scale of the 2025–2026 Iran massacres remains a subject of intense dispute
In short: During the 2025–2026 Iranian protests, the government deployed security forces and foreign militias to suppress dissent with overwhelming violence. While official figures remain low, independent medical networks and international observers suggest a death toll that could be significantly higher than what is being reported by the state.
The crackdown was initiated following orders from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who reportedly commanded that protests be "crushed... by any means necessary." Security forces were allegedly given the green light to use live fire and kill indiscriminately to spread fear. Key planners for these actions included Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The violence was particularly concentrated during a major crackdown on January 8–9, where reports suggest that semi-trailer trucks were used instead of ambulances as the administration reportedly ran out of body bags.
Discrepancies in death tolls highlight the difficulty of verifying casualties during an active conflict. The Iranian government officially put the death toll at 3,117, claiming most were "terrorists." However, independent sources provide much higher estimates. Iran International reported a confirmed list of 6,634 deaths by February 3, while Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA) published a detailed named list of 7,007 victims by late February. Other reports from the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps cited figures as high as 36,500.
Medical professionals have played a critical role in documenting the human cost. A network of over 80 doctors across 12 provinces estimated that less than 10% of deaths were being officially registered, suggesting the total could exceed 30,000. This aligns with reports from Time Magazine and The Sunday Times, which cited hospital records showing tens of thousands of protest-related deaths in early January alone. These figures represent some of the largest massacres in Iran's modern history, surpassing previous major events like the 1988 executions.
To manage the flow of information, Iranian authorities imposed a total internet shutdown from late February to late May 2026. This blackout, combined with a long-standing record of systematic underreporting by the state—where official figures have historically covered only about 12% of verified executions—makes it difficult for the international community to confirm the final scale of the violence. Despite these hurdles, human rights organizations continue to use video footage and hospital data to build a comprehensive picture of the repression.
