In short: The 2025–26 campaign proved to be a transformative period for Liverpool. Beyond the intense competition in the Champions League and domestic cups, the club faced profound personal loss and significant structural changes, ultimately concluding with the departure of their head coach after a challenging year.

The 2025–26 season marked Liverpool's 64th consecutive year in the top flight of English football and their 134th overall. It was a campaign defined by both high-stakes European competition and unexpected domestic shifts. In the UEFA Champions League, the club entered the league phase as reigning Premier League champions, facing heavyweights like Real Madrid and Inter Milan. While they secured a spot in the knockout round of 16 by finishing in the top eight of the league phase, their journey eventually led to a quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Tragedy struck the squad on 3 July 2025, when Diogo Jota passed away following a car accident. In a tribute to the player, the club retired his number 20 shirt across all levels of the organization on 11 July 2025. This loss coincided with a period of roster instability, as it was the first time since the 2019–20 season that the club competed without Jota.

The season ended on a somber note for the club's leadership. Following a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and a failure to secure any silverware, head coach Arne Slot departed his position with immediate effect on 30 May 2026. Despite the coaching change, individual excellence remained, with Dominik Szoboszlai being named Player of the Season following fan votes.

Looking toward the future, the club utilized the transfer window to bolster their defense. In early 2026, they secured Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes for a fee of £55,000,000, with an additional £5,000,000 available in potential add-ons. They also reached an agreement for Austrian defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Wien for £2,600,000, though his arrival was set for the following season.
