In short: The 16th edition of the Women's Super League cup competition has undergone a radical transformation. Rebranded as the Players Cup, the tournament now features a Swiss-style format designed specifically to prioritize athlete well-being. This shift forces a major change in how teams compete, excluding top clubs from the current season.

The 2026–27 season introduces a significant overhaul to the league cup, now officially sponsored by Subway. This iteration, the 16th in the competition's history, moves away from standard knockout brackets in favor of a two-stage structure: a League Phase followed by a Knockout Phase. The rebranding reflects a deliberate focus on player welfare, aiming to balance competitive intensity with the physical demands placed on modern squads.

A notable consequence of this restructuring is the absence of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea. These three clubs are currently engaged in the UEFA Women's Champions League, and their exclusion is intended to prevent schedule overload while providing more playing time for teams not involved in continental matches. Because of this, Chelsea is unable to defend the title they previously held, and the possibility of a quadruple trophy haul for any club has been eliminated for this season.

During the League Phase, which runs from September to December 2026, 23 teams are organized into Northern and Southern regional groups. Each side plays six matches, split evenly between home and away fixtures. Scoring is unique: while a standard win grants three points, matches tied after 90 minutes proceed to a penalty shootout, where the winner earns two points and the loser receives one. The top eight teams from the combined table then advance to the seeded Knockout Phase, which concludes with a final match held at a neutral site during the second weekend of March 2027.
