A year of expansion and new titles for Japan's Rizin Fighting Federation
In short: Entering its twelfth year, the Rizin Fighting Federation is expanding its footprint across Japan. From inaugural heavyweight title pursuits to debut appearances in Sendai and Hiroshima, the 2026 season promises significant shifts in the mixed martial arts landscape, featuring high-stakes tournament finals and championship defenses in several new cities.
The 2026 Rizin Fighting Federation calendar is defined by a strategic expansion across Japan and the introduction of new championship stakes. The promotion is venturing into new territories, making its first-ever appearances in Sendai at Xebio Arena (June 6) and Hiroshima at the Hiroshima Prefectural Sports Center (July 18). This expansion is balanced by returns to established hubs, including its fifth visit to Kobe in May and its sixth visit to Osaka at the Kyocera Dome in September. The promotion also returned to Fukuoka on April 12, marking its fourth visit to the city and its first since October 2022. Additionally, the heavyweights will face a significant challenge as the tournament winner must prepare for a high-stakes clash on New Year's Eve.
A central narrative of the year is the RIZIN JAPAN GP Heavyweight Tournament, announced on April 23. Four fighters are competing in the tournament: Ryo Sakai, King Edokpolo, Tsuyoshi Sudario, and Mikio Ueda. Following the semifinal matches held at Rizin 54 in August, the two winners will meet in a final match scheduled for November. The ultimate goal for the tournament winner is a New Year's Eve bout against Alexander Soldatkin to compete for the inaugural heavyweight title. The tournament's progress was marked by the semifinals taking place at the Toyota Arena Tokyo during the Rizin 54 event on August 11. This follows the initial announcement made earlier in the spring.
The year's marquee matchups also feature established champions defending their status. In September, the Super Rizin 5 event in Osaka features an undefeated featherweight champion, Razhabali Shaydullaev, defending his title against former Bellator champion A.J. McKee, with the inaugural PFL Featherweight Championship also at stake. Meanwhile, the promotion continues to showcase high-level talent across various weight classes, including flyweight, bantamweight, and lightweight title bouts throughout the season. Other notable championship bouts include a bantamweight clash between Danny Sabatello and Jinnosuke Kashimura in July. Furthermore, the flyweight division will see Makoto Takahashi defend his title against Tony Laramie in November.
