In short: The 2026–27 Women's Super League season marks a significant milestone for English football. With the league expanding to fourteen teams, the competition is set to evolve, featuring a brand-new trophy and the return of historic clubs to the top tier. Here is how the landscape of the women's game is shifting.

The 2026–27 campaign represents the sixteenth season of the Women's Super League since its inception in 2010. This year also marks the eighth season following a major structural overhaul of the top four tiers of women's football in England. As the defending champions, Manchester City enter the season with a target on their backs, while the league introduces a fresh trophy design to commemorate this period of growth.

Expansion was a central theme leading into this season, following an announcement in June 2025 that the league would grow by two clubs. This change necessitated a competitive path for new entrants. Birmingham City secured their spot by winning the second tier, while Crystal Palace earned promotion as the division's runner-up on 2 May 2026. Birmingham City makes their comeback to the highest level after a four-year absence, having last competed there during the 2021–22 season.

The final spot in the expanded league was determined by a high-stakes play-off on 23 May 2026. Charlton Athletic, the third-placed team from the second tier, faced off against Leicester City, who finished twelfth in the top flight. After a tense match decided by penalties, Charlton Athletic emerged victorious. This win marks their debut in the modern league format and their first appearance in the English women's top division in eighteen years, following their departure from the former national top-tier structure in 2008.
