Endurance racing is evolving with a new six-hour marathon at Road America
In short: The 2026 IMSA SportsCar Championship is preparing for a significant shift in its schedule. While much of the calendar remains stable, a historic change is coming to the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix, marking a new era of endurance testing for the world's premier prototype and GT machinery.
The 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, entering its 56th sanctioned season, is set to introduce a landmark event. According to the provisional schedule released on March 13, 2025, the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix at Road America will host its first-ever six-hour endurance race in the series' history. This marks a departure from the standard durations seen in other rounds, such as the Battle on the Bricks, which will revert to a 2-hour, 40-minute format similar to its 2023 configuration.
The championship's structure remains complex, particularly regarding how success is measured. While the season-long points for drivers and teams are awarded based on race and qualifying finishes, the Michelin Endurance Cup operates under a distinct 5–4–3–2 scoring system. This specialized competition rewards consistency across specific intervals during the most grueling races. For instance, at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, points are tallied at the 6, 12, and 18-hour marks, as well as the finish.
Manufacturer competition adds another layer of strategic depth. In classes like Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) and GT Daytona Pro (GTD Pro), manufacturers only receive points for their highest-finishing car. This means if a single manufacturer secures both first and second place, only the victory earns points toward the manufacturer championship, effectively allowing trailing competitors to move up in the standings. This system ensures that the battle for manufacturer supremacy remains a high-stakes pursuit of singular, peak performance.
