How a Thai guest team conquered the 2026 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference
In short: The 2026 Invitational Conference marked a turning point for the Premier Volleyball League, featuring a unique blend of top-tier local clubs and international guest squads. When the dust settled at the Araneta Coliseum, a visiting team from Thailand had claimed the championship, reshaping the league's competitive landscape in the process.
The 2026 Invitational Conference, held from August 31 to September 8, served as the opening act for the 2026–27 season. Unlike standard league play, this tournament invited specific international guest teams to challenge the best domestic clubs. Qualification for local teams was determined by their performance in the 2026 All-Filipino Conference, with the top four active squads—Creamline Cool Smashers, PLDT High Speed Hitters, Farm Fresh Foxies, and Nxled Chameleons—securing their spots.
International participation added a layer of complexity to the event. Thailand's Est Cola, making their second appearance, dominated the field to secure the title by defeating the Nxled Chameleons in the final. This victory made them only the second guest team to win the championship, following Japan's Kurashiki Ablaze in 2023. Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City team also debuted, bringing a roster of younger players to the competition. Meanwhile, the Philippine national team, Alas Pilipinas, was barred from participating under its national banner due to FIVB regulations regarding club tournaments.
The tournament format relied on a single round-robin preliminary stage, where teams were ranked using the FIVB system. Success was measured primarily by match wins, with tie-breakers involving match points, set ratios, and point ratios. Interestingly, the 2026 edition broke from tradition by omitting the Finals Most Valuable Player award, opting instead to recognize only a single Conference MVP. The event concluded with the PLDT High Speed Hitters taking third place, underscoring the high stakes of this brief but intense preseason showcase.
